Although 2020 posed a great number of challenges across the nation, it encouraged the Shaker Painting team to embrace the good. Even at the height of the pandemic, we committed to bringing you the highest quality services through increased communication, safety measures, and flexible remote collaboration.
Through it all, we successfully took on new projects and implemented cutting-edge techniques to complete some of our favorite transformations to date.
From tight deadlines to full community repaints, we’re proud to share our top five projects from 2020.
COLORADO LOGISTICS PARK PROJECT
One of our most special – and challenging – projects this past year was the Colorado Logistics Park. This was the first major project awarded to us under our new commercial painting division, and it was our first tilt up project. This project also presented us with our first experience applying a texture coating to concrete panels.
In order to execute this new technique, we purchased new equipment and trained our crew how to apply the product. Due to the number of colors and their placement, we first had to apply a main color uniform texture before identifying and painting targeted panels light grey, dark grey, white, red and blue.
The most challenging part of this entire project was making sure that the texture coverage rate was correct. The Brinkmann Team was instrumental in helping us wrap up a project of this size. Additional thanks to Eric Vasquez and Ahern Rentals for providing us with the equipment needed to complete this project!
CCC BARRACKS
In another first, we were excited to work with new general contracting partner Mark Young Construction, Inc.
Together, we completed the restoration of the CCC Barracks, bringing the site back to life for the City of Denver and park rangers who use it.
The client wanted to preserve the original charm the building provides on its own. As you can see above, we scraped, lightly sanded, and applied clear sealer to the existing beams seen running through the ceilings to preserve the building’s history while giving it a fresh look. We also used period correct linseed oil paint on all green doors and windows, which you can see in the below photo. Linseed oil paint is an incredibly unique material that can and has been known to last for 500 years! Linseed oil paint can be applied on any surface. It protects the substrate from weather and wind, the ravages of time, and the changing seasons.
SHEA PROPERTIES
The Shea Properties Headquarters presented the unique challenge of working with both existing and new construction surfaces. Working with general contractor Howell Construction on this tenant improvement (TI) project, our first step was cleaning all exposed ceilings and ductwork that had been collecting dust over the years. This step was a special recommendation by the Shaker management team meant to ensure the paint would adhere to the surface of the overhead structures, offering greater longevity and quality. Our team was also responsible for the purchase and installation of all wallcoverings for this project. This project called for a significant amount of FilzFelt wallcovering, which is a non-woven textile that is naturally moisture-resistant, durable, renewable, and just plain gorgeous.
Beginning this project in early March, our daily lives were flipped upside down as we navigated a new world facing a global pandemic. We’re even more grateful to our project partners at Howell Construction during this time for keeping our spirits lifted and safety first.
While on-site, we were all mindful of working safely among other trades completing their own tasks. To accommodate the plumbers, electricians, drywall crews, and many others finishing their jobs, we often had our crews working after hours and on weekends to keep the number of workers on the property to a minimum.

HOPEBRIDGE PROJECT
Embarking on another tenant improvement (TI) project, we took on a tight deadline. The Hopebridge Project was completed with general contractor Epic Construction in just over one month!

We committed again to weekends and longer hours to accommodate other onsite workers and COVID-19 safety precautions. Due to the schedule, we embraced flexibility and worked around ceiling grids and cabinet installations in rooms that hadn't even been primed or painted yet.
Epic Construction was a wonderful partner. Together, we kept this project on schedule and helped Epic avoid liquidated damages and changes that could have been incurred had the project not met its due date.
COMMUNITY REPAINT AT COLUMBINE HOMES
We had a wonderful opportunity this year to work with the Denver Housing Authority and Prisma International to update the look and feel of the Columbine Homes community located in Denver.
Offering affordable housing to Colorado families, Columbine Homes is comprised of 200 units that are managed by DHA. The size, scope, and condensed time frame of the project was a huge undertaking, and required teamwork and collaboration from all facets of our organization. With a totally new and updated color scheme, the project came out with exceptional results!
We are grateful for our partnership with Carlos Gomez from Prisma International, and Wayne Taunton with Denver Housing Authority who made this project possible.
